I travel for work more than I'd like to admit. Three cities in four days kind of travel. The kind where you forget what time zone you're in and start measuring your life in airport carpet patterns. Last month, I was coming back from a conference in Chicago. A two-hour layover in Denver. Plenty of time to grab an overpriced sandwich and find my gate.
Or so I thought.
The announcement came at 3:15. Mechanical issue. The plane we were supposed to board had a "maintenance situation" that would take at least four hours to resolve. They'd already moved us to a different gate. Then they moved us again. Then they stopped giving updates altogether.
I found a seat near a window, plugged in my laptop, and tried to get some work done. But my brain was fried. Three days of networking, of fake laughing at jokes from clients, of eating hotel food that looked better than it tasted. I couldn't focus. I couldn't even pretend to focus.
I pulled out my phone. Scrolled through social media. Looked at the same five apps. Checked the flight status. Delayed. Still delayed. Probably going to be delayed forever.

I thought about cashing out. I even pulled up the withdrawal screen. But then I looked at the flight status. Still delayed. Now estimated for 8:45. Another two hours at least. I had time. And I had five hundred dollars that I hadn't had an hour ago.

The plane finally boarded at 9:00. I was in a middle seat between a guy who talked on his phone for the first hour and a woman who fell asleep on my shoulder. I didn't care. I put in my headphones, closed my eyes, and thought about the numbers.

When I got home, the money was already in my account. I used it to pay for the rental car I'd booked for the next work trip. Then I used a little more to take my girlfriend out to dinner. Someplace nice. Someplace with cloth napkins and a wine list I didn't understand.
She asked where the money came from. I told her I'd gotten lucky at the airport. She laughed and said that was the most me thing she'd ever heard.
